Trip to Madrid

Madrid ist einfach nur eine beeindruckende Stadt und ich habe so viele Bilder innerhalb von 2 Tagen verschossen, wie noch nie! Die Zeit war einfach viel zu kurz und obwohl ich eine gute Führung durch die Stadt hatte, werde ich das nächste mal die Stadt auf eigener Faust erkunden. Vielleicht sind 2 Tage auch einfach zu kurz, um alles aufzunehmen. Wie man sieht, hat auch in Spanien der Herbst voll eingeschlagen und es war soo kalt - ein Glück, dass ab und zu die Sonne heraus kam. 

Madrid is just an amazing city and I took so much pictures within 2 days, as never before! The time was flying so fast and although I had a good guide for the city tour, next time I will explore Madrid on my own. But maybe 2 days are to short to take it all in.  As you can see on the pictures, fall has arrived and it was soo damn cold - luckily once in a while the sun came through.

Cliff tour along the north coast

Der Norden Spaniens hat eine ganze Menge zu bieten: Sight Seeing, Surfing, Shopping, Pintxos... und natürlich eine atemberaubende Landschaft an der nördlich gelegenen Küste! Und da es hier schon seit 3 Tagen durchregnet und stürmt, habe ich mir mal wieder die Bilder von vor einigen Wochen angeschaut, wo ich mit ein paar Freunden die Klippen erkundet habe. Unglaublich wie schnell das Wetter wechselt! Wir hatten um die 30° und wanderten ca. 3 Stunden die Küste entlang - was mal ein schöne Abwechslung vom ständigen beachen war. Allerdings waren wir froh, als wir endlich zum Strand in Sopelana ankamen und ins Meer springen konnten :)

The north of Spain has so much to offer: Sight Seeing, surfing, shopping, Pintxos... and a breathtaking landscape on the northern coast! And since it rains here cats and dogs, I have a look at my pictures from a few weeks ago, where I explored with some friends the cliffs. Unbelievable how quickly the weather changes! We had about 30° and hiked for 3 hours along the coast. That was a nice break from constant lounging in the sun. However, we were glad when we finally arrived to the beach in Sopelana and jumped into the sea :)

Trip to Zaragoza #2

So hier ist nun der 2. Teil meiner Zaragozareise (Teil #1 gibts hier). Am Sonntag besorgten wir uns Bustickets um die typischen Touristenpunkte abzuklappern. Dabei sahen wir unter anderem die Plaza de Toros den wunderschönen Palast Aljafería und fuhren durch den neuen Teil der Stadt, der aus vielen modernen architektonischen Gebäuden besteht, die damals extra für die Expo im Jahre 2008 erbaut wurden.

Finally you can see now the 2nd part of my trip to Zaragoza (Part #1 klick here). On Sunday we bought bus tickets to see the typical touristic points. Among other things we saw Plaza de Toros and the beautiful palace Aljafería and drove to the new part of the city, consisting of many modern architectural buildings, which were built expecially for the Expo in 2008.

Hier noch ein kleiner Reisetipp von mir: Ich hab mir vor Kurzem ein Handtuch aus Mikrofasern gekauft und in Zaragoza das erste mal getestet. Es ist sehr dünn und lässt sich somit zu einem kleinen taschenbuchgroßen Rechteck formen, womit es wenig Platz weg nimmt. Abtrocknen lässt es sich auch sehr gut, es nimmt schnell Wasser auf und fühlt sich schön weich an. Wahrscheinlich werde ich mir noch ein kleineres für die Haare besorgen, denn für kurze Trips oder einfach auch nur zum Sport ist es super praktisch. Die folgenden Bilder zeigen noch einmal die Neustadt Zaragozas.

Travel tip: Recently I bought a micro towel and tested it in Zaragoza for the first time. It is very thin and you can form it into a size of a small soft-cover and it's so compact. It is very aborbent and gives you a lovely dry feeling. Probably I'll get another one for the hair because it is grate to take it to the gym, travelling trips or beach. The following pictures show you the new town of Zaragoza.

Trip to Zaragoza #1

Letzes Wochenende ging es mit 2 polnischen Freundinnen nach Zaragoza. Superschöne Stadt, übrigens die Hauptstadt einer weiteren Gemeinde Aragonien, die man nicht missen sollte!! Mit ALSA Bus fuhren wir also am Samstag (für nur insgesamt 22 €!!!) von Bilbao los und kamen nach ca. 4 Stunden an dem neuen Eisenbahn- und Busbahnhof Zaragoza-Delicias an. 

Last weekend I went with 2 polish friends to Zaragoza. Wonderful city, by the way it is the capital of Aragón - another autonomous community, which is worth it to be seen. With ALSA Bus we started on Saturday in the morning for incredible  22 € from Bilbao and arrived after about 4 hours on the new railway station Zaragoza Delicias.

...Kleiner Tipp noch mal am Rande: Uns ist aufgefallen, dass man die günstigen Angebote von ALSA Bus nur über einen "spanischen" PC buchen kann - ansonsten funktioniert das komischerweise nicht bzw. dann nur bei den "normalen" Fahrpreisen. *sehrmerkwürdig* Allgemein ist es auf vielen Internetseiten ratsam, zumindest die spanische Spracheinstellung/Version zu wählen, da man meist günstigere (Flug-, Zug-, Bus-, etc.) Preise erhält....

...Random tip: We noticed that booking the cheap offers on the ALSA Bus website is only possible with a "spanish" PC - otherwise it's not working or just if you take the normal fares. *weird* In general it is better to book at least on websites in spanish versions to get the best and cheapest offers for flights, busses, trains etc...

Dann gings auch gleich weiter zum zentral gelegenen Hostel Albergue (ich glaube viel mehr gibt es auch gar nicht im Zentrum) - was auch gleichzeitig meine erste Hostel-Erfahrung war. Als erstes war Sightseeing angesagt, es ging los in die Altstadt mit der wunderschönen Basílica del Pilar und einigen mehreren älteren Kirchen. Mit dem Wetter hatten wir auch richtig Glück, es war quasi ein perfektes Wochenende.

Then we went straight to the centrally located Hostel Alberque, which was my first hostel experience. At first sightseeing was announced, we went off in the historic centre with the beautyful Basílica del Pilar and some several older churches. The weather was pretty good as well, so it was practically a perfect weekend.

Hier noch ein Super-Tipp von mir: Restaurante Casa Emilio! Außen eher unscheinbar und nicht wirklich einladend, wird man drinnen von einer gemütlichen Atmosphäre und einer freundlichen Bedienung überrascht. Wir nahmen ein Mittagsmenü für 11,50 € zu uns, indem 3 Gänge (Vorspeise, Hauptspeise und Dessert) sowie ein Getränk enthalten war. Besonders zu empfehlen ist die Nachspeise Natilla de la Casa. *yummy*

I really recommend you Restaurante Casa Emilio! The outside seems unimpressive and uninviting but inside you will be surprised by a comfortable atmosphere and the friendly staff. We had a menu for just 11,50 € including starter, main dish, dessert and a beverage. Especially you have to try the dessert Natilla de la Casa - so delicious!!!

Am Nachmittag holten wir noch mal etwas Schlaf im Hostel nach um für die Nacht fit zu sein. An sich war es auch recht sauber - jedoch waren die Toiletten und Duschräume nicht besonders gereinigt :/ Unten gibt es eine Gemeinschaftsküche und Möglichkeiten drinnen und draußen zu sitzen. Im Keller befindet sich eine Bar "the cave" und am Samstag spielte auch eine Band. Insgesamt hatten wir pro Nacht 16 € bezahlt, was bei dieser guten Lage einfach unschlagbar ist. 

In the afternoon we cought up some sleep in the hostel to get ready for the night. The hostel inself was pretty clean - but not the toilets and shower rooms :/ Downstairs there is a shared kitchen and possibilities to sit inside and outside. In the basement is a bar "the cave" where surprisingly played a band. Overall, we paid just 16 € per night, what is simply unbeatable at this excellent location.

Trip to Zaragoza #2 kommt in ein paar Tagen raus... nicht verpassen ;-)

Trip to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Als erstes möchte ich mich für den Artikel Las experiencias de una estudiante berlinesa en Bilbao über meinen Blog auf der Internetseite About Basque Country bedanken. Ich freue mich natürlich auch riesig darüber, wenn die Bewohner des Baskenlandes meinen Blog lesen und somit Einblicke erhalten, wie andere ihr Land wahrnehmen.

First I want to say thank you, for writing the article Las experiencias de una estudiante berlinesa en Bilbao on the webside About Basque Country about my blog.  Of course I am also extremely happy when the inhabitants of the Basque Country read my Blog, and obtain insights into how others perceive their country.

Letztes Wochenende hatte ich eine fantastische Reise nach San Juan de Gaztelugatxe gemacht. Der Ort erinnert mit seinem Kloster an der Spitze an eine Beschreibung aus einer Fantasy-Geschichte. Viele baskische Prominente sind dort hin gekommen, um ihre Märchenhochzeit zu feiern. 

Last weekend I had a fantastic trip to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The beautifull place remembers me on a fairy tale story with its wonderful landscape and the antique monastery on the top of it. A lot of famous basque stars were there to celebrate their Fairytalewedding.

Die kleine Insel ist ca. 270 m lang und ca. 80 m breit und durch eine Steinbrücke mit dem ca. 200 m entfernten Festland verbunden. Der Weg hoch war mit 237 Stufen auch schon etwas anstrengend, aber für Sportler wie mich geht das vollkommen klar ;-)

The small island is approximately 280 m large and 80 m wide and is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge . The way to the top (237 steps!) was pretty exhausting but  as an athlete like me to cope ;-)

Anschließend war ich noch im Fischerort Bermeo, mit einem wunderschönen Hafen.

After that I visited also the fishing place Bermeo, whis its beautiful port.

Impressions Bilbao City

Als echte Berlinerin bin ich das Leben in einer Großstadt gewohnt. Vergleicht man Bilbao mit Berlin liegt jedoch alles viel näher beieinander, was wirklich angenehm sein kann. Von meinem Wohnort Sarriko bin ich innerhalb von 10 Minuten im Zentrum Moyua, in 10 weiteren Minuten in der Altstadt Casco Viejo und in 20 Minuten am Strand. Die Berge zum Wandern sind auch nicht weit entfernt und wenn ich etwas mehr Zeit habe, werde ich von geeigneten Routen berichten. 

As a real Berlin girl I am used to living in a big city. However, comparing to my home town in Bilbao everything is located really close quarters, which is pretty comfortable. I need 10 minutes to reach the centre Moyua, 10 minutes to reach the history centre Casco Viejo and in 20 minutes I catch the beach. The mountains are not far away as well and if I'll have more time I am gonna show you some appropriate routes. 

Previous an industrial city - now a nice town to visit and actually a place to study abroad

Zurzeit sind jedoch so viele Aufgaben in der Uni zu erledigen, dass nicht mehr viel Freizeit übrig bleibt. In fast allen Fächern werden kleinere und größere Hausaufgaben verlangt oder Zwischenprüfungen terminiert, die für die Endnote relevant sind. Die UPV/EHU kommt mir manchmal vor wie eine Schule; es wird Pünktlichkeit und Anwesenheit verlangt, man darf nicht ans Handy gehen und nicht miteinander sprechen, nicht essen, nicht trinken... In Berlin kümmert sich niemand darum, ob du zu spät kommst oder die ganze Zeit mit deinem Handy rumspielst. 

But at the moment I have so much homework to do, that there is not much free time left. In almost every subjects are bigger and smaller exercises to complete or midterm exams were scheduled. The UPV/EHU sometimes seems to me like school: you have to be on time and attendant, you are not allowed to take your mobile and to talk to someone, no eating, no drinking... in Berlin no one cares if you are coming late or are playing the whole time with your cell phone.

Nichtsdestotrotz, ist es eine einmalige Gelegenheit eine neue Kultur und Sprache kennen zu lernen und sich in einem unbekannten Land zurecht zu finden - ohne großartige Sprachkenntnisse. Man erfährt somit nicht nur viel über die baskische und spanische Kultur, sondern auch aus vielen anderen Teilen der Welt. Kochen mit Italienern, Wohnen mit Spaniern, Reisen mit Polen, Lernen mit Amerikanern, Marokkanern, Brasilianern, Engländern, Franzosen und so vielen mehr. Somit lernt man auch eine ganze Menge über sich selbst.

Nevertheless, it is a great opportunity to get to know a new culture and language and to get along in an unknown city - without gorgeous language skills. You are learning not only about the Basque and Spanish culture but also about cultures from a lot of places in the world. Cooking with Italians, living with the Spanish, travelling with Polands, learning with Americans, Moroccans, Brazilians, the Brithish, the French and so many more. At least you are learning a lot about yourself.

How to eat in Bilbao

Best Pintxos you can find at Plaza Nueva

Tschüß Vollkornbrot und Kräuterquark - Hallo Weißbrot, Mayonnaise, Chorizo, Tortillas, Pintxos, Kalimotxos, Churros und Sardinen! Ja, das Essen hier ist schon ziemlich gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber nach einigen Versuchen und Probieren findet man tolle Kulinaritäten. 

Good Bye wholemeal bread and herb quark - Hello white bread, mayonnaise, Chorizo, Tortillas, Pintxos, Kalimotxos, Churros and sardines! Well, the food is sometimes really unaccustomed to me but after a few tests I found some nice culinary specialities. 

It's Pintxos time... qué rico!

Besonders bekannt für die baskische Küche sind Pintxos, die man hier an jeder Ecke in jedem Café bzw. Bar erhält. Pintxos sind kleine Portionen, wie z. B. Sandwiches, Burgers oder auch Tortillas; die man typischerweise mit einem Glas Wein zu sich nimmt. Wenn man - wie ich - mit Meerestieren und Fisch nicht so experimentierfreudig ist, sollte man jedoch vorsichtig sein, da sich öfters mal ein paar Sardinchen oder Oktopus hinter der Pomenade versteckt.

Especially famous for the Basque Kitchen are Pintxos, which you can find on every corner in every Café or Bar. Pintxos are little portiones, for example sandwiches, burgers or Tortillas, which are used to take with a glas of wine. If you are - like me - not so adventurous with fish and marine animals, then you have to be careful. Because sometimes there are hidden some sardines or octupusses, which you can't see at first glance.

Die abendliche Atmosphäre in den Straßen ist jedoch unverwechselbar: Alle stehen draußen; trinken, essen und unterhalten sich bis in die späten Abendstunden. Kinder spielen auf den nahe liegenden Spielplätzen. Wenn man die Bar verlässt, sagt man der Bedienung, wieviel Pintxos und Wein zu sich genommen hat und bezahlt. Die Bestellung und Bezahlung basiert somit auf gegenseitigen Vertrauen.

In the evening you can feel a distinctive atmosphere in the streets. Up to the late hours evereyone is outside, drinking wine, eating Pintxos, kids are playing on play courts, which you can find on every corner. Usually the food is payed, when you are going to leave the bar. So just tell the serving stuff how much Pintxos you ate, this system is based on mutual trust.
